News & Announcements

Check out the latest news items and announcements from AWS.

Announcing Amazon CloudSearch
We are pleased to announce the launch of Amazon CloudSearch, a fully-managed search service in the cloud that makes it easy to set up, manage, and scale search applications. Amazon CloudSearch enables customers to offload the administrative burdens of operating and scaling a search service. Customers don't have to worry about hardware provisioning, setup and configuration, data partitioning, or software patches. Amazon CloudSearch automatically scales as the volume of data and traffic fluctuates. Built for high throughput and low latency, Amazon CloudSearch supports a rich set of features including free text search, faceted search, customizable relevance ranking, configurable search fields, text processing options, and near real-time indexing. To learn more, visit the Amazon CloudSearch page.

PHP and Git deployment for AWS Elastic Beanstalk
AWS Elastic Beanstalk now supports a PHP runtime and Git deployment. Elastic Beanstalk already makes it easier to quickly deploy and manage Java applications in the AWS cloud. Now, Elastic Beanstalk offers the same functionality for your PHP applications. You can easily launch a PHP environment using the AWS Management Console or the Elastic Beanstalk command line interface. You can now set up your Git repositories to directly deploy changes to your AWS Elastic Beanstalk environments. Git speeds up deployments by only pushing your modified files to AWS Elastic Beanstalk. In seconds, PHP applications get updated on a set of Amazon EC2 instances. To learn more about how to launch your PHP environment and use Git to deploy, go to Deploying AWS Elastic Beanstalk Applications in PHP Using Git in the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Developer Guide.

Amazon RDS launches free trial program
AWS is introducing a limited time free trial program to help new Amazon RDS customers get started. Customers eligible for the free trial will be able to run one free Single-AZ Small DB Instance for sixty (60) days, along with 20 GB of database storage capacity and 10 million IO requests. You can run a MySQL or Oracle database (using the bring your own license model) on your free DB Instance. The free trial is now available in all regions.

For more information about the Amazon RDS Free Trial program, please visit the Amazon RDS free trial page. To learn more about Amazon RDS, visit the Amazon RDS page.

Amazon RDS increases backup retention period
The automated backup feature of Amazon RDS enables point-in-time recovery for your DB Instance, allowing you to restore your DB Instance to any second during your retention period, up to the last five minutes. Many customers have requested for longer backup retention periods for compliance purposes. We are excited to announce that the maximum retention period for automated backups has been increased from eight days to thirty five days. This new limit will enable you to store more than a month of backups. To modify the retention period for your DB instance to a higher limit, please visit the AWS Management Console.

Announcing the availability of Reserved Cache Nodes for Amazon ElastiCache
We are excited to announce the availability of Reserved Cache Nodes for Amazon ElastiCache. This allows you to save up to 70% over On Demand prices while adding a Memcached-compatible, in-memory cache to your application architecture in a matter of minutes. To learn more about how Amazon ElastiCache can speed up your web applications and how to save money using Reserved Cache Nodes please visit the Amazon ElastiCache page.

Amazon Route 53 announces Latency Based Routing (LBR)
Amazon Route 53's new Latency Based Routing (LBR) feature helps improve your application's performance for a global audience by routing your customers to the AWS endpoint (e.g. EC2 instances, Elastic IPs or ELBs) that provides the fastest experience based on actual performance measurements of the different AWS regions where your application is running. Learn more by registering for our Introduction to Latency Based Routing (LBR) with Amazon Route 53 webinar on April 26th at 10AM PST. You can also learn more by reading Jeff Barr's blog post.

Amazon CloudFront launches two solutions for live streaming and lowers minimum content expiration period
We are excited to announce that we have recently launched two solutions for live streaming using Amazon CloudFront. You can now use Amazon CloudFront with Amazon EC2 running Windows Media Services for live Smooth Streaming which enables you to deliver live media over HTTP to both Microsoft Silverlight clients and Apple iOS devices. You can also now use Amazon CloudFront with Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 running on Amazon EC2 to configure live HTTP streaming to both Flash Player and Apple iOS devices. Learn more at Jeff Barr's blog post or at our webinar with speakers from both Amazon CloudFront and Adobe on May 04, 2012 at 10:00AM PDT.

We're also pleased to announce that you can now use Amazon CloudFront for frequently changing content. Before today, Amazon CloudFront's edge locations cached objects for a minimum of 60 minutes. Effective today, we've removed the sixty minute minimum expiration period (also known as time-to-live or TTL) from Amazon CloudFront.

Amazon CloudFront Annual Survey - Your feedback helps make our product better
Please take a moment to help us improve our product by taking the 2012 Amazon CloudFront Survey. We welcome your input on how we're doing and what we could be doing better. This survey is open to all AWS customers.

AWS CloudFormation makes it easier for you to create, update, and manage your AWS resources in a predictable way
There is a new feature for AWS CloudFormation that allows you to add or remove resources from your running stack, enabling your stack to evolve as its requirements change over time. With AWS CloudFormation, you can now manage the complete lifecycle the AWS resources powering your application.

AWS CloudFormation allows you to create the AWS infrastructure and configure your EC2 instances to run your application. As your application evolves, you can now add AWS resources, change their properties, or even update the software for your application.

AWS CloudFormation uses templates to describe the resources and configuration your application needs. Templates are simple JSON formatted text files that can be placed under source control mechanisms, alongside your application source.

For more details on managing your AWS resources using AWS CloudFormation, visit Jeff Barr's blog post.

Amazon Elastic MapReduce now supports Pig 0.9.2, Hive 0.7.1.4, and Pig Versioning
Pig 0.9.2 adds support for a number of features including user-defined functions written in Python, Boolean data types, and using Amazon S3 paths to register UDFs. You can also now provide a specific Pig version to use at job flow launch or specify that you would like to use our latest version, ensuring that you always have access to our most up-to-date features. For more information please visit Configuring Pig in the Amazon EMR Developer Guide.

Customer Q&A: Cloud innovation at Intuit and Edmodo using Amazon RDS
Recently our CTO Werner Vogels had a great conversation with Troy Otillio from Intuit and Jack Murgia from Edmodo. These innovators are using Amazon RDS to free up their time to focus on what's important for building value for their customers. You can read the whole story on his blog post.

Top 6 gluten free diet iPhone & Android apps

Here at Phones Review we not only endeavor to keep you informed about the latest smartphones and tablets but also like to give readers information about some of the best apps available. Today we??ve rounded up some of the top apps, for iOS and Android devices that cater for those with gluten-free diets and these should be really helpful for those who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle while sticking to a restrictive diet.

The first three apps we??ll give you are for(i.e., iPad and) while the following three are for the Android platform so there really is something for everyone. Simply hit the titles for each app for either theor Google Play Store links if you decide you want to download any of the following. Some of these are paid apps while others are free and we??ve included that information for each one as well as key features to give you an idea of what the apps offer.

The first app then is simply titled theand developed by FitKit. This will cost you $1.99 and is suitable for iPhone, iPod touch andrunning iOS 4.0 or later. It has around 300 gluten-free recipes that cover every meal from breakfast to supper and features include a stylish interface, the ability to star your favorite recipes and a filter menu.

Up next isThis one is a bit pricier at $3.99 and is compatible for, iPod touch and iPad using.0 or later. This also provides plenty of gluten-free recipes and will help people get used to their new lifestyle eating foods to keep them healthy. Several categories of recipes are included and they are breakfast & eggs, main dishes, salads & side dishes, snacks & condiments, desserts & sweets.

The next iOS app isand this one is acompatible for iPhone, iPod touch and iPads running iOS 4.3 or later. The idea of this one is helping people to know where they can eat out and dishes they will be able to find. For those following a gluten-free diet it can be difficult when dining out but this app aims to collect information from users by letting them add suitable meals at restaurants in their city or town. It??s really a community-led database although it freely concedes that most of the current content is NYC-based. Nevertheless as the app becomes more popular this app could find a real niche.

Now on toand the first iswhich is another free app and requires Android 1.6 or later. In a way this is similar to the previous app we mentioned as it helps people find businesses that are gluten-free friendly. However rather than just restaurants this also aims to help those looking for fast food, bars, grocery stores and other places you might need for gluten-free foods. For each business on the app you??ll be able to find directions and menus and you can add your own suggestions.

Our next Android app isand as you can imagine this has almost a thousand suitable recipes. Recipes can be searched by name or ingredients and this should really help those with gluten or wheat intolerance or celiac disease. This is also a free app and requires Android 1.1 or later.

Finally our last app is theand this one is the most expensive of our recommended apps coming in at 6.09. It??s suitable for Android devices running Android 1.6 or later. This extremely comprehensive app will help you look for suitable restaurants offering gluten-free recipes and will also assist in shopping for gluten-free foods, saving you time and money. It also has over 1000 recipes and will give a further five recipes every week. Checklists are also available such as a Health Checklist, Fresh Baked Goods, Holiday Recipes and Menus, Pre-Prepared Meals, Travel Checklist and more.

Hopefully you will be able to find an app to suit you for your gluten-free lifestyle amongst the ones we??ve found? Let us know what you think of any of the above apps and if you have other really good apps for gluten-free diets then please share them with us by using the comments box below.

Some customers burst into tears when they first bite into one of her cakes. It's not just that they're good... they're gluten-free.

Marie Tagliaferrois one of the very few ?? if not the only pastry chef in pastry-lovingFrance?? to offer customers such delicacies in a country where gluten intolerance has long been considered a problem of the very young.

When customers call at her small Paris shop, they always ask "is it really gluten-free?" says her husband Francois, the bakery's owner-manager.

"And we say, yes, I promise, it's gluten-free... And they are very emotional, they start to eat the cakes and we have some people who are moved to tears because they haven't had a religieuse (a glazed puff pastry) or a lemon meringue tart for 15 years," he adds.

It might not quite be the stuff ofMarcel Proust's madeleine recollections, but for people deprived for years of a chocolate eclair, the Tagliaferro shop has proved a godsend.

Cakes and pastries were always Marie's life. But a few years ago doctors told her she had a severe intolerance to gluten ?? a protein found in cereals such as wheat ?? which can cause chronic diarrhoea and vomiting.

She thought she would never again be able to enjoy her own pastry creations.

But now she's has opened a patisserie dedicated to gluten-free versions of the best French pastries.

"I did some tests... at the start I just used exactly the sameI learnt in traditional patisserie, and then I adapted them according to the results," she explains.

"For example, with choux pastry you want the air to escape but I couldn't use the same approach with gluten-free dough because it goes all over the place. So, if we don't know, we just try it and see if it works!" she says.

A medical intolerance to gluten, known as coeliac disease, affects up to one person in 100.

And while in many countries it's a standard dietary variation, in France, where gluten-based foodstuffs are almost a national icon, the disease is still under-diagnosed and little known.

ForBrigitte Jolivet, president ofFrench Association of Gluten Intolerence, little is done for French sufferers.

"In textbooks from 20 or 30 years ago, doctors were taught that coeliac disease was a disease of children which disappeared in adolescence, so it wasn't something adults had," she says.

"So doctors who trained 20 or 30 years ago ?? for them the discussion's over. And it's true that the baguette is one of the symbols of France, so cutting out bread isn't easy here, it's difficult," she adds.

Even for those without celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is popular on health grounds ?? meaning anyone can enjoy the pastries here, and if Marie's done her job properly, you won't even know the difference.

So far, the reaction has been far more enthusiastic than they expected.

If things go well, Marie and her husband plan to soon start tackling the next symbol of French cuisine ?? home-made gluten-free baguettes.

Young Women Hardest Hit by Rising Melanoma Rate

Action Points

  • More young adults, and especially women in their 20s and 30s, are presenting with cutaneous melanoma.
  • Note that the risk of dying from melanoma fell by 9% a year from 1970-1979 through 2000-2009.

More young adults, and females in particular, are presenting with cutaneous melanoma, but overall and disease-specific survival have improved over time, researchers reported.

A longitudinal analysis covering four decades showed that the incidence of cutaneous melanoma rose by a factor of more than 6 from 1970-1979 through 2000-2009, according to Jerry Brewer, MD, and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

On the other hand, the risk of dying from melanoma fell by 9% a year over the same period, Brewer and colleagues reported in the April issue ofMayo Clinic Proceedings.

The findings come from data collected by the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which has been aggregating medical information on residents of Olmstead County, Minn., since 1966.

The researchers cautioned that residents of the county -- largely white and highly educated -- might not reflect the rest of the U.S. population, so the results may not apply more widely.

However, researchbased on the CDC's Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database has shown that national melanoma rates have been rising, while survival has been improving, the researchers noted.

"We anticipated we'd find rising rates, as other studies are suggesting," Brewer said in a statement. "But we found an even higher incidence than the National Cancer Institute had reported using the (SEER) database, and in particular, a dramatic rise in women in their 20s and 30s."

The analysis included 256 men and women, ages 18 to 39, with a first lifetime diagnosis of melanoma from Jan. 1, 1970, through Dec. 31, 2009, the researchers reported.

Over the four decades, he and colleagues found, the incidence rate per 100,000 residents rose from 4.8 in 1970 through 1979 to 30.8 in 2000 through 2009.

In absolute numbers, there were 16 diagnoses in 1970-1979, 44 in the 1980s, 67 in the 1990s, and 129 in 2000 through 2009, Brewer and colleagues reported.

Among men, the rate went from 4.3 per 100,000 residents to 18.6 over the four decades, slightly more than a four-fold increase.

Among women, the rate skyrocketed by a factor of more than eight, from 5.4 to 43.5 cases per 100,000 residents.

But each 1-year increase in calendar year of diagnosis was associated with an 8% reduction in the risk of death from any cause, which was significant atP=0.005.

And each 1-year increase in calendar year of diagnosis was also associated with a 9% decreased risk of death from metastatic melanoma, which was significant atP=0.01, they reported.

The researchers also found that over the years the proportion of early-stage cancers among the diagnoses rose, perhaps as a result of better awareness of the risk of skin cancer.

The researchers noted that tanning beds have been associated with increased risk of skin cancer, and Brewer said they might play a role in the increased incidence he and colleagues found.

"The rise in tanning bed behavior over the years is probably a major contributor," he said.

The researchers cautioned that the epidemiology project might have missed some cases of melanoma, if patients sought treatment elsewhere. As well, they noted, residents of the county usually have good medical care, so the result might not apply to populations with more limited access.

s a young adult with porcelain skin I prefer that term to pale I get it. Bronzed skin is perpetually in and nobody likes going to the beach only to have to sit under an umbrella and shield their eyes from the glare of their own upper thighs. But a new study from the Mayo Clinic finds an alarming increase in skin cancer among young adults, and the reason may be their persistent efforts to tan.

Published in the April issue ofMayo Clinic Proceedings, the study reports that between the years 1970 to 2009,the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women and fourfold among young men aged 18 to 39. Although men generally have a higher lifetime risk of melanoma than women do, the researchers found the opposite trend to be true among the young adults. We knew we would see an increase in rates among young women, but we were surprised we saw such a dramatic increase. This seems to be higher than what has been reported previously, said Mayo Clinic dermatologist Dr. Jerry Brewer in a teleconference.

For the study, researchers used data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a decades-long database of patient care in Olmsted County, Minn. The researchers looked at first-time melanoma diagnoses for all patients. Based on previous studies on tanning behavior, the authors suggest that therise of melanomaamong young women is linked to their penchant for indoor tanning.

In 2009, the International Agency of Research on Cancer declaredtanning bedsa human carcinogen, movingthem into the top cancer-risk category alongside cigarettes. According to Dr. Brewer, tanning beds and cigarettes have the same cancer risk, but teens are ignoring the warnings. He says there is a disconnect in education about the dangers of tanning-bed use that needs to be acknowledged.

Tanning beds can give you seven times the dose of UV radiation as the sun, says Dr. Brewer, but young adults are still going.

(MORE:Why Teens Sunbathe More, Use Sunscreen Less)

Its important to note that although melanoma rates are on the rise, mortality rates have improved. Researchers credit this to improved early detection methods and prompt medical procedures.

People are now more aware of their skin and of the need to see a doctor when they see changes. As a result, many cases can be caught before the cancer advances to a deep melanoma, which is harder to treat, said Dr. Brewer in astatement.

Dr. Brewer and his fellow researchers supportbans on tanning booth use especially for teens and young adults, who aremore vulnerableto the damaging effects of early and frequent tanning but they recognize the difficulty of enforcing them. Its like trying to ban cigarettes, its very hard. Should we be limiting tanning beds? Absolutely. Is it easy? Absolutely not. Manystates do have bans, but kids are smart. We say, You need a parents signature, and the kids write the signature themselves, said Dr. Brewer in the teleconference.

The study group was predominately caucasian, but the researchers say the findings are valid and applicable to similar U.S. populations of the same age range. There is currently a melanoma epidemic in the U.S., particularly in young women and middle-aged men. This has been documented by various large population based studies, with our study confirming that trend in young women, says Dr. Brewer.

(MORE:In Young Tanners, Fear of Wrinkling Is Worse than Cancer)

But if people know what to look for, they can prevent melanoma. It only takes about three minutes to do a skin exam.

Simply look at your skin, says Dr. Brewer. This includes getting mirrors and looking at your back and otherhard to see areas. It takes a bit of education to get young people to start performing this initial first step, but once they do, the simple act of looking over your skin can significantly decrease chances of dying from skin cancer.

Dr. Brewer also recommends educating yourself on the ABCDEs of melanoma:

A asymmetry: one side of a mole or dark spot looks different from the other half

B border: instead of being circular or oval, the mole has a jagged edge

C color: the mole has more than one color, a dark area, a lightarea or the colors red, white, or blue within it

D diameter: the mole is larger than 6 mm across, roughly the size of a pencil eraser

E evolution: any other changes are noted in the mole, even if the change cant be categorized by A, B, C or D, above. Any itching or bleeding in a mole is also important.

There has been a dramatic rise in skin cancer cases in women aged under 40, according to leading U.S medical researchers.

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic found the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women and fourfold among young men.

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and can spread rapidly.

The study looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients aged 18 to 39 living in Olmsted County, Minnesota, from 1970 to 2009.

Study leader Dr Jerry Brewer, said: 'We anticipated we'd find rising rates, as other studies are suggesting, but we found an even higher incidence than the National Cancer Institute had reported using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database, and in particular, a dramatic rise in women in their 20s and 30s.'

The lifetime risk of melanoma was found to be higher in males than females, but the opposite was true in young adults and adolescents.

Researchers also found mortality rates from the disease have improved over the years, likely due to early detection of skin cancer and prompt medical care.

'People are now more aware of their skin and of the need to see a doctor when they see changes,' Dr Brewer said.

'As a result, many cases may be caught before the cancer advances to a deep melanoma, which is harder to treat.'

Over-exposure to strong sunlight without protection is another risk-factor for melanoma

The researchers speculated that the use of indoor tanning beds is a key culprit in the rising cancer rate in young women.

'A recent study reported that people who use indoor tanning beds frequently are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, and we know young women are more likely to use them than young men,' Dr Brewer said.

'The results of this study emphasise the importance of active interventions to decrease risk factors for skin cancer and, in particular, to continue to alert young women that indoor tanning has carcinogenic effects that increase the risk of melanoma.'

Janey Helland, frpm Mapleton, Minnestoa, said she didn't think of the dangers when tanning in high school and college.

'I used tanning beds to get ready for homecoming and prom,' she says.

'In college, I tanned before a trip to Barbados because I didn't want to get sunburned.'

At age 21, Ms Helland noticed an abnormal spot on her leg. It was melanoma, and the diagnosis changed her life.

'I really didn't know what my future was going to look like, or if I'd even have one,' she said.

Two years later, she is cancer-free and dedicated to educating others.

'I would advocate that it's better to be safe than sorry,' she said.

'My advice is to educate yourself and research the risk factors.'

Childhood sunburns and ultraviolet exposure in adulthood may also contribute to melanoma development, the researchers say.

Planning to head to a tanning salon to beef up your bronze looks for prom and graduation or to get a head start on beach season? Young people might want to reconsider.

A dramatic rise in skin cancer rates among young adults is leading health officials to shed light on the risk factors, specifically tanning salons, which women are more likely to use.

Women under 40 are hit hardest by the escalating incidence of melanoma, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, out today.

Researchers examined records from a decades-long database of all patient care in Olmsted County, Minn., and looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients 18-39 from 1970 to 2009. Melanoma cases increased eightfold among women in that time and fourfold for men, the authors say.

"We need to get away from the idea that skin cancer is an older person's disease,' says report co-author Jerry Brewer, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The findings might be explained by gender-specific behaviors addressed in other studies, the authors wrote. "Young women are more likely than young men to participate in activities that increase risk for melanoma, including voluntary exposure to artificial sunlamps."

The study is the latest evidence of a steady rise in skin cancer. A major government study published Wednesday reported that while new cases of many of the most common cancers are declining, melanoma cases are increasing.

"We're very concerned about the melanoma rates and the damage done by early exposure to sun, but also the increasing use of tanning beds," says physician Marcus Plescia, director of the division of cancer prevention for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tanning industry disagrees

The Indoor Tanning Association defends tanning lamps. "There is no consensus among researchers regarding the relationship between melanoma skin cancer and UV exposure either from the sun or a sunbed," saysexecutivedirectorJohn Overstreet. "I expect more from the Mayo Clinic. There is no direct link from their report to tanning beds."

Yet, according to theNationalInstitutes of Health, excess exposure to ultraviolet light increases risk for all skin cancers. UV light is invisible radiation that can damage DNA in the skin and can be generated by the sun, sunlamps and tanning beds.

Skin cancer most often occurs in people 50 and older. Melanoma is the most serious type and is potentially deadly. Symptoms include changes in an existing mole or development of an unusual growth on your skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. People with fair skin are at higher risk. The authors noted that the population of Olmsted County is mostly white.

The 'Jersey Shore' effect

Fair skin has less pigment to protect the body from UV radiation. Other risk factors: one or more severe sunburns as a child, an unusual number of moles, a family history of melanoma and exposure to UV light.

The possibility of skin cancer might seem remote to young people. "I think (TV) shows like Jersey Shore portray healthy people as someone who has a great tan,' says Laura Hopwood, 22, who was diagnosed with melanoma a year ago. "Somehow you're not attractive unless you're deeply tanned. Before I developed melanoma, a friend scolded me about not using sunscreen."

Hopwood, who works at Barnard College in New York, says she did not do enough to protect herself from sun damage but has never used a tanning bed. Her parents have not had melanoma. A surgeon made an incision from below her left eye to nearly her chin to remove damaged skin. Now she gets routine skin checkups every six months.

"The people most affected are not just Baby Boomers but actually young adults," says Hopwood's dermatologist, Kavita Mariwalla, director of dermatological surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. "Tanning before prom or big events has become a 'norm' for many teenagers. What they don't know is that each time they visit a tanning booth, their risk of skin cancer rises."

FDA Denies Citizen Petition Seeking Ban Of Bisphenol A; Safety Review Continues

FDA Review of Bisphenol A

Key Development:Bisphenol A may continue to be used as a component of food packaging, FDA said March 30 as itdenieda citizen's petition to ban the chemical in food-contact materials.

What's Next:FDA said it will complete an updated review of bisphenol A's safety this year.

The Food and Drug Administrationdeniedon March 30 a citizens' petition asking the agency to ban bisphenol A from food-contact materials.

The decision means companies may continue to use the chemical for food packaging, FDA said in aletterdenying the Natural Resources Defense Council's 2008 petition (36 CRR 362, 3/26/12).

According to the agency, NRDC's petition failed to provide sufficient evidence that bisphenol A harms human health to persuade it to launch a rulemaking to ban the chemical. Bisphenol A, or BPA, is used to make polycarbonate plastic beverage bottles and food packaging as well as epoxy resins used to coat metal food cans and jar tops.

The studies NRDC presented to support its call for a ban had a number of limitations, including too few animals in the studies, inconsistent results, and laboratory animals being injected with BPA rather than ingesting it through their diets, FDA said.

In a statement, FDA spokesman Douglas Karas said: I cannot stress enough that this is not a final safety determination on BPA. This is a decision on the NRDC petition. The FDA denied the NRDC petition because it did not have the scientific data needed for the FDA to change current regulations, which allow the use of BPA in food packaging.

FDA has been studying and continues to study the effects of BPA and will make any necessary changes to BPA's status based on the science. FDA is working toward completion of another updated safety review on BPA this year to include all relevant studies and publications, FDA said.

FDA Lowers Exposure Estimates.

The agency said information it has received since the filing of NRDC's petition in 2008 continue to support the use of bisphenol A.

For example, data show that infants' exposure to bisphenol A is 84 percent to 92 percent lower than previously estimated, FDA said.

Initially, FDA had estimated adults were exposed to 0.185 micrograms BPA per kilogram bodyweight per day (/kg-bw/day) while it estimated infants were exposed to 2.42 /kg-bw/day.

New data indicate that infants are exposed to 0.2-0.4 /kg-bw/day, while children and adults consume 0.1-0.2 /kg-bw/day, the agency said.

In addition, the concentration of BPA in food that pregnant rodents ate that could be passed on to their unborn pups was so low it could not be measured, FDA said.

Researchers fed pregnant rodents 100 to 1,000 times more BPA than people are exposed to through food, and could not detect the active form of BPA in the fetus eight hours after the mother's exposure, the agency said.

NRDC Says 'FDA Made the Wrong Call.'

NRDC issued a statement criticizing the agency's decision.

Sarah Janssen, senior scientist in NRDC's public health program, said: We believe FDA made the wrong call. The agency has failed to protect our health and safety--in the face of scientific studies that continue to raise disturbing questions about the long-term effects of BPA exposures, especially in fetuses, babies, and young children. This illustrates the need for a major overhaul of how the government protects us against dangerous chemicals.

The North American Metal Packaging Alliance Inc. praised the FDA decision as a welcome development, demonstrating the seriousness of the agency's commitment to doing its job of protecting public health.

Instead of bowing to pressure from activist groups, the agency is relying on science to set public health policy. FDA's decision to pursue an updated risk assessment is especially important given that preliminary results from ongoing government funded research support the safety of BPA in food contact uses, said John Rost, the alliance's chairman.

In another statement, the American Chemistry Council said: FDA's decision today, which has taken into consideration the best available science, again confirms that BPA is safe for use in food-contact materials, as it has been approved and used safely for four decades.
