One of the first things I learned when I was an
online marketing toddler was, "Don't fall in
love with your product."
Meaning, make sure enough people want what
you sell, that they're willing and able to pay for
it, and that you can reach those people affordably
and predictably.
In my experience (both as a marketing coach and
personally), this is the hardest rule to follow.
I've been guilty of spending a lot of time and effort
and money to create products that received a spirited
"So what?" from my prospects.
The key to avoiding this profit-killing mistake is
to open up loud and clear communication channels
with your market, so you can find out exactly what
they want from you, how they want it, and how
they want you to sell it to them.
The best tool for gathering this information is
the online survey. And since I'm a rank amateur at
survey creation, interpretation and monetization,
I decided to get some help.
My survey mentor, Jeanne Hurlbert of MySurveyExpert.com,
has a long and impressive resume. She was hired to run the
surveys for the Tony Robbins Companies, and recently she's
begun sharing her vast expertise with the rest of us.
