My friend Kevin Thompson spent 1995 working on a fishing boat in Alaska. He tells this story:

"It was the winter of '95 and we were in one heck of a storm. It was the kind of thing you only see in the movies.

On this particular night I was working the deck and my job was to bring the catch on boat.

And the truth is, I was scared... really scared!

My way of dealing with my fears was to NEVER look out at the horizon because I didn't want to see the big picture.

I'd just concentrate on my job, which was getting the catch on the boat. I'd never look at the horizon in a storm like this, cause that was just too scary for me.

Besides,the skipper would let me know if I was in any real danger.

All of a sudden...

I hear the skipper's thundering voice over the intercom system, and he yells...

"Kevin, Hit The Deck!!!!!"

Before I could even react, I was buried beneath a wall of water that hurled me all the way across the boat, face first, into the railing on the other side.

And when the water finally subsided, my first thought was, "Thank God I'm still on the boat!".

A lot of damage was done to my body.

My front teeth were gone.

In fact, to this day I still have significant facial scarring from the accident.

But I had to count my blessings.

Because there's one thing I know...

If that wave would've thrown me just a few inches higher, it would've tossed me right over the railing of the boat, into the freezing waters of the Bering Sea, and there's no way the Skipper would've got that boat turned around in time to save me.

I would've died right then and there.

But looking back, seeing all that's happened in my life since that day... all that I've been able to accomplish... all the other people I've been able to help... I realize that God didn't want me to die that night."
